My Beliefs and Values About Teaching
Effective teaching, I believe, relies on what one believes are the ultimate purposes of learning and teaching. I believe that we all have an inherent curiosity and love for knowledge. Knowledge is empowering and the intrinsic joy that results from discovery, exploration and mastery, drive the positive cycle of learning for learning. Plutarch best describes what I believe is my purpose for teaching: "The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled".
My beliefs and values about education and teaching are driven by the belief that knowledge empowers one with the ability to accomplish tasks in one’s life. I believe that a solid and diverse educational foundation can provide people with skills and confidence to succeed in every strand of life; socially, emotionally and intellectually.
I view learning as an organic process and my students as dynamic individuals with unique experiences, strengths, capabilities and preferences as learners. I take great joy in working with children and adolescents, developing a rapport with my students, to understand how they learn and what interests them in order to reach their best outcomes. My idea of a master teacher is one, who inspires learning. I hope to instill my students with a passion for learning; to create, discover, question and explore, that will last throughout their lifetime.
Ultimately, I believe my goal, as an educator is to create and foster a positive learning environment that is focused on achievement, challenge, creativity and enjoyment and where my students will feel success each day and every day.
