How I Use VELS in My Classroom
The Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS) are of extreme importance in both my lesson and assessment planning and preparation. As students progress along a continuum of learning, I use the VELS progression points to make on-balance judgements regarding student achievement and progress in relation to the standards. This ensures the appropriate learning outcomes, skills and concepts are addressed through the content I teach.
Planning with VELS
I use the following lesson plan format to insure that I am guiding my students to meet state-wide curriculum standards. This ensures that my lessons are consistent with intent and my planning is meticulous; identifying the curriculum to be covered, designing a range of assessment tasks to cover the curriculum, and developing content that leads toward assessment.

Assessing with VELS
Throughout my teaching experiences, I have attempted to include a variety of assessment strategies and methods to ensure my students can demonstrate the learning progression they make.
Below is is an example of how I monitor and record student learning and progress in accordance to VELS in a lower primary classroom. The use of a student portfolio is one way in which I can continually monitor progress through the standards and collect and record evidence of student achievement and learning for reporting purposes.
