Student Wellbeing
Wellbeing is more than simply measuring one's happiness and satisfaction in life; it is about have meaning in one's life, about fulfilling potential, feeling that life is worthwhile and viewing it with curiosity, excitement, richness and dynamism.
The school community and schooling experience play a central role in the lives of young people as not only are they fundamental to the promotion and maintenance of effective learning, but also the emotional well-being and security of its students.
Throughout my teaching experiences and my university studies, which included a unit on 'Promoting Student Wellbeing', I have come to understand how the educational environments of schools form a significant setting in which its social conditions and interactions can affect students' well-being. For young people, schools are where they spend a large proportion of their day during this critical period of their development and where new and different relationships and social interactions with fellow peers and adults outside the familial environment are developed.
As educational institutions have a responsibility to every student to ensure that they have the best possible educational experience, it is fundamental that schools nurture a healthy social environment through the creation and maintenance of positive learning environments and relationships, for the promotion and maintenance of student wellbeing as they grow and mature into adulthood.
